Gut Health 101: How to make a seed mix
One of my favorite resources for health and nutrition advice is Tim Spector and his team at Zoe. They’ve helped bring gut health into the mainstream and educate us on how to improve our overall gut health. Their advice is to eat 30 plants a week. By doing so, we’re nourishing our good gut bacteria, which in turn keeps us healthy.
One tip I learned from Tim’s cookbook, The Food For Life Cookbook, is to keep a jar of assorted seeds in the cupboard at all times. Getting into the habit of adding mixed seeds to as many meals as possible allows us to feed our gut with whole foods in an instant.
This isn’t so much a recipe as it is a reminder that eating as many different whole foods as possible should be the goal. I use my seed mix to sprinkle into smoothies, add on top of porridge, or anywhere else I can get away with.
Ingredients
- 1 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1 cup sunflower seeds
- 1 cup chia seeds
- 1 cup flax seeds
- 1 cup sesame seeds
Instructions
- Add all the seeds into a jar with a lid.
- Close the lid and give the jar a shake. Enjoy!
Tips
- More variety: Keep adding to the jar any time it’s running low to create even more variety for your gut.
- Unlimited uses: Add to smoothies, porridge, avocado toast, or wherever you can!
